From New York City to my hometown Wenzhou, bidding farewell to my lover and moving back with my parents, I don’t feel at home anywhere anymore. Will You Look At Me, in which I point the camera at my family and myself, is a personal essay on fear, silence, and love. Through the camera lens, my distant gaze seems to be given justification and courage. As I was filming my mother, I wondered what it was like to be in her womb, before I was born, when we were the closest and connected, in the water.
ニューヨークシティから故郷の温州へ、恋人に別れを告げ、両親のもとへ帰る。僕にはもう、ホームと呼べる場所はない。家族と自分にカメラを向けた『Will You Look At Me』は、恐怖、沈黙、愛についてのエッセイである。カメラのレンズを通した自分の俯瞰的な視線は僕自身を正当化し、勇気を与えてくれるようだ。母を撮影しながら考えていた。彼女の胎内にいるときは、どんな風だっただろう。僕が生まれてくる前の、僕と母が一番近くで、水中で繋がっていたあのとき。

Shuli Huang
Shuli Huang is a Chinese writer, director, and cinematographer living in New York. His short film, Will You Look At Me, premiered at the 61st Semaine de la Critique where it was awarded Queer Palm of Festival de Cannes 2022, and went on to win Short Film Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival 2023. Goodbye First Love, his latest short film premiered in competition at the Berlinale Shorts 2024. He has worked as a cinematographer on several feature films, including Farewell, My Hometown, which won the New Currents Award at the Busan International Film Festival 2021. Shuli studied cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy and film directing in the Graduate Film Program at New York University.
ニューヨーク在住の中国人作家、監督、撮影監督。短編映画『Will You Look At Me』は第61回批評家週間映画祭でプレミア上映され、2022年カンヌ国際映画祭クィア・パルム賞を受賞。最新短編『Goodbye First Love』は2024年ベルリン国際短編映画祭コンペティション部門でプレミア上映された。2021年釜山国際映画祭で百花繚乱賞を受賞した『Farewell, My hometown』など、長編映画の撮影監督としても活躍。北京電影学院では撮影を、ニューヨーク大学大学院で監督を専攻した。

Record of a covid pandemic spent in Madrid, Spain. Being outside of Japan makes him fully aware that he is Japanese. Through phone calls with his mother, he becomes more conscious and reminded of his homeland.

2019年スペイン、マドリードのEFTI Centro Internacional de Cine y Fotografíaで演出・制作を学ぶ。 2021年にスペイン、サンセバスティアンのElías Querejeta Zine EskolaのFilmmaking コースに参加、2022年に15ヶ月の修士課程を修了。 2023年、サンセバスティアン国際映画祭の映画作家助成レジデンスプログラムIkusmira Berriakのレジデンスメンバーに選出。現在、拠点を東京に移し、映像を制作している。
Hikaru Uwagawa was born in Hiroshima and grew up in Yokohama, Japan.
Moved to Madrid in 2019 after his short film, A Portrait of the Young Man as a Young
Man (2019), won best prize in the EFTI scholarship competition, where he studied
film directing and production. During his studies, he made 2 short films Ventana
Indiscreta (2020) and Un Paseo Nocturno a Mi Casa (2021).
In 2021, he participated in the Filmmaking course at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, a
film school in San Sebastián, Spain, where he completed a 15-month master's
program in 2022.
In 2023, he was selected as a member in residence for the San Sebastian
International Film Festival's filmmaker grant residency program, Ikusmira Berriak, for
the production of his feature film Ulysses. Currently based in Tokyo.

Erica Sheu
Erica Sheu/徐璐 makes short films, expanded cinema and installation with celluloid film. Her work is often about diary film, handmade film, screen and projections, cross-generational memories, Taiwanese identity politics. She works and lives in Los Angeles, United States. She runs ReaRflex, an experimental filmmaker collective based in Taiwan with Johan Chang and Tzuan Wu.
セルロイドフィルムを用いて短編映画、拡張映画、展示を制作している。主に映像日記や世代間を超えた記憶、歴史、言語、集団化された単一性、台湾のアイデンティティの為の政治についての作品を制作。ニューヨーク映画祭、ロッテルダム国際映画祭、オーバーハウゼン国際短編映画祭、台湾国際ドキュメンタリー映画祭など数々の映画祭で上映された。シューは台湾の実験映画団体ReaRFlexのメンバーでもある。

ネットで『記憶は思い出せば思い出すほど刻まれる』という文章を見かけた時、『刻まれる』という言葉から連想したのは、『細かく切り刻まれる』様子だった。なぞることができるほど鮮明だった景色達は、幾度も思い出すことで形を変え、やがて形を失うだろう。そうしてセンセーションになる。コロナ禍黙々作品。
I saw a sentence on the internet that said 'memories are engraved the more they are recalled', and the word 'engraved' made me think of 'cut into smaller pieces'. Scenery that was so vivid that it could be traced would change shape as it was recalled over and over again, and would eventually lose its form. In the end, they become a sensation. The quarantine film.

ドキュメンタリー風エクスペリメンタルフィルムメイカー。日常的に録る映像や音、写真等の素材を使用し、純粋な映像実験をプレゼンテーションすると同時に、しんしんと感情を積む仕掛けを施す。国内外の映画祭で上映活動をしながら、近年は身体の動きを直接画に反映させた記録映像を元に実験的に制作している。
Documentary-style experimental filmmaker. Influenced by the history of avant-garde cinema, she began making her own films. Using materials from her daily collection of images, sounds and photographs, she presents pure visual experiments, while at the same time creating mechanisms of evoking one's humanity. In recent years, she has been making experimental films based on recorded footage that directly reflects the body-movements in the images.

人は「映画」を作る時にどこに目を向けてきたのだろうか？

「映画」が発明された直後、最初に人が「まなざし」を向けたのは工場の出口であり、そこには名前の無い不特定多数の人々が映されていた。次に「まなざし」を向けたのは家族の姿だった。庭で朝食を食べている家族らしき親子三人。匿名の集合体である「群衆」ではなく父、母、子供という個人としての人間、家族という小集団が映されていた。

それから130年、人の営為は時代を経ても変わらない。

多くの人が友人、知人、恋人などの隣人、そして家族にその「まなざし」を向けてきた。

愛情、憎悪、妬み、辛み、諦念などのあらゆる感情、さらには国家、社会、世界。そして生と死。

人と人の間にある目に見えない感情、関係性を映し撮ろうとした。

テクノロジーが人と人との距離だけでなく感覚、感情さえも変えてしまった2024年。

現在の「まなざし」は隣人、家族に何を見て、その先にある何を映すのだろうか？

本企画ではギャラリー内に多様な複数の上映スペースを設ける事で複数の鑑賞体験を可能にし、

多様な「まなざし」を持った作品群への理解、そして隣人、家族への再考の一助になればと

考えている。

Where have we people been gazing when making 'films'?

Immediately after the invention of cinema, the first object to which people turned their gaze was the factory exit, where they saw an unspecified number of people without names.The next 'gaze' was directed at a family.What appeared to be three family members eating breakfast in the garden.The image was not of an anonymous 'crowd', but of a father, mother and child as individuals, a small group of people called a family.

One hundred and thirty years later, humankind's activities have not changed over time.

Many people have turned their 'gaze' on their neighbours - friends, acquaintances and lovers - and on their families.

All kinds of sentiments, such as love, hatred, envy, bitterness, resignation... As well as the state, society and the world...And life and death.

We have tried to capture the invisible emotions and relationships between people.

In 2024, technology has changed not only the distance between people, but also their senses and even their emotions.

What does the current 'gaze' see in our neighbours and families, and what does it reflect beyond that?

This project will enable various viewing experiences by setting up multiple screening spaces in the gallery,

We hope that this will allow viewers to understand the diverse "gaze" of the films and encourage them to revisit the idea of neighbours and family.

"Films that can be seen beyond that 'gaze'."

Kana Akahori_赤堀香菜（イメージフォーラム）

2018年、イメージフォーラム映像研究所(第42期)修了。2019年よりイメージフォーラムスタッフとして勤務。他のプログラムキュレーションに、「Chase After-Images」（Minikino Film Week 7 — Bali International Short Film Festival 2021）、「Spectrums: International Arthouse Showcase — Image Forum Festival」（Jumping Frames 2023 — Hong Kong International Movement-image Festival）。

グラウンド・レベル・シネマ_Ground Level Cinema

「グラウンドレベルシネマ」は現在進行形の作家達が企画、運営を行う映像作品上映団体です。一昨年 2020 年 11 月にイメージフォーラム映像研究所の研究生を中心に発足しました。現在は主に日本や台湾を拠点に活動している３０人以上の作家が自由に出入りする流動的な団体です。発足以来二年間で計13回の上映会・イベントを開催。「グラウンド・レベル・シネマ」ナンバリングシリーズは原則新作のみの上映会なので、観客が現在進行形で制作している若手作家たちの作品に触れることのできる貴重な機会として、好評を博しました。

グラウンドレベルシネマは「アンダーグラウンドシネマ」というジャンルを乗り越えるために、通常映画が観賞される状況とは、少し異なるシュチュエーションの上映空間を立ち上げる必要があると考えます。website: https://www.groundlevelcinema.com/
